The Graduate Students' Association (GSA) at the University of Lethbridge is a student body of graduate students, elected by our peers to represent graduate student issues at various levels of the university. Our mandate is to identify graduate student needs in order to ensure policies across the university advocate for students appropriately.

11th Annual Meeting of the Minds Conference

“Intersections”

18th March 2017

The Graduate Students’ Association of the University of Lethbridge is pleased to invite submissions for the 11th Annual Meeting of the Minds Conference to be held on the 18th of March, 2017. The theme for this year is “Intersections”. The theme was chosen to honor inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary research.

We encourage submissions of:

·        Papers

·        Images of research (posters)

·        Performances (art, music, video, spoken word)

The Conference accepts submissions from students in all faculties and in any year of graduate study. While alignment with the theme is recommended, all submissions are welcome.

The conference is also especially considering submissions that commemorate the 50th anniversary of the University.

 

IMPORTANT DATES:

·        Deadline for submissions: 10th January, 2017

·        Applicants will be notified of approval: 10th February, 2017

·        Opening Ceremony/3MT Finals: 17th March, 2017

·        Date of Conference: 18th March, 2016

 

About Meeting of the Minds Conference

The Meeting of the Minds Conference is an inter-disciplinary graduate research conference organized by the Graduate Students' Association of the University of Lethbridge. Held annually, this conference brings researchers from multiple disciplines together in one space, to explore inter-disciplinary opportunities, present their work, and network with other researchers. The conference provides a platform to showcase all types of traditional and non-traditional research, and facilitates students’ growth and evolution as academics, scholars, and practitioners. The conference is now in its 11th year and is spread over two days, with the 3 Minute Thesis (3MT) finals being held as part of the opening ceremony.

Instructions for Submissions

Students in a graduate program are invited to submit a presentation abstract for the Meeting of the Minds, 2017. We encourage submissions from a multidisciplinary approach, and we encourage submissions articulated in simple language that avoid jargon as much as possible.

General guidelines for submissions:

·         Submissions can be in either .pdf or .doc format (for submissions in alternative formats please contact gsa.conference@uleth.ca prior to sending)

·         All submissions must be sent to gsa.conference@uleth.ca on or before 10th January, 2016

·         The abstract should not be greater than 300 words. The abstract should be double-spaced,12-point font, Times New Roman.

·         Oral, musical, and video presentation session will be a 15-20 minute presentation followed by audience participation, questions, and feedback.

·         For each abstract submitted, please indicate the medium of your presentation; for example, oral, poster, video, musical, or other kinds. In addition, please indicate if you need any special equipment for your presentation (computer, projector, pins for posters etc.)

Abstracts should include:

a)   Purpose of study and/or background

b)   Technique used or methodology or research framework

c)   Implications or conclusions or discussions

d)   Importance of study

e)   Data sources

·         Authors (including presenter and supervisor if applicable):

·         Presenter(s):

·         Program(s):

·         Department(s):

·         Supervisor(s):

·         Presenter email(s) and phone number(s):

·         Preferred presentation type (e.g., talk, poster, panel, art piece, musical or drama performance):

·         Please include information on duration of artistic performances (maximum 15 mins), equipment needed (if any) and any other information deemed necessary.

Evaluation process

Abstracts will be peer-reviewed by researchers. While one of the reviewers will be from a related discipline, the other will be from a connected discipline to evaluate the suitability of your abstract/presentation for a general audience, as well as the significance of your research in academia. If the reviewers cannot understand what you did, or why you did it, your abstract will not be considered for the Meeting of the Minds. 

 

*** Please remember that your presentation may also be eligible for publication in the second volume of the GSA Meeting of the Minds Graduate Journal. A Call for Submissions for the journal will open before the conference.

Call for Reviewers

11th Annual Meeting of the Minds Conference " Intersections"

18th March, 2017

The Graduate Students’ Association of the University of Lethbridge is recruiting reviewers for the 11th Annual Meeting of the Minds conference to be held on the 18th of March, 2017. The call is open to faculty, staff, post- docs and graduate students.

The conference is seeking conscientious reviewers across all faculties and disciplines to review submissions to the conference. The Meeting of the Minds conference follows a double-blind peer-review process for all submissions, with two reviewers assessing the academic quality and integrity of each submission. The first reviewer is usually from the same or similar field of expertise, and the second reviewer is usually from a related or different field. Reviewers will evaluate the suitability of abstracts/presentations for a general audience, as well as the academic significance of the research. Each reviewer will be assigned a minimum of two and a maximum of four submissions.

If you would like to be part of our review board, please send an email to  gsa.internal@uleth.ca with “Reviewer for Conference” as the title and we will get back to you as soon as possible.
